An estimate for duty and wharfage only, from the published rates. Customs classifies goods on their entry, courier charges vary, and none of this is legal advice. Rates: Bermuda Customs Tariff 2026 (effective 1 April 2026). Checked 2026-09-07.
Three things the shipping sites get wrong about Bermuda
- There is no VAT. Several aggregator calculators add a 15% VAT. Bermuda has none. Duty and wharfage are the whole bill from Customs.
- Duty is on the goods, not the shipping. The Revenue Act's valuation rules exclude the cost of transport to Bermuda, handling and insurance from the customs value. You pay duty on what you paid for the item.
- There is no $50 or $200 threshold on packages. A courier or postal package is dutiable from the first dollar unless it is a bona fide gift under $30. The $300 allowance is for goods you carry in yourself.
Common questions
- How much is duty on a phone or laptop shipped to Bermuda?
- 25% of the price paid, plus 1.25% wharfage if it comes by courier or freight — so about $105 on a $400 phone before the courier's own charges.
- How much is duty on clothes and shoes?
- 6.5% of the price by post, courier or freight, plus wharfage unless it comes by post.
- Do I pay duty on shipping costs?
- No. Under the Revenue Act 1898 the customs value is the price actually paid for the goods; transport to Bermuda, handling and insurance are excluded.
- What can I bring in duty free in my luggage?
- Residents: $300 of goods acquired abroad, plus 1 litre of spirits, 1 litre of wine, 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars and 0.5 kg of tobacco. Visitors: $50 of goods that stay in Bermuda, and the same alcohol and tobacco allowances. Above that, goods are 25%.
- Are gifts duty free?
- By post or courier, a bona fide gift worth $30 or less per package is duty free. Anything over that is charged at the normal rate on the full value.
- What is wharfage?
- A 1.25% charge on the value of goods landed by air or sea cargo, collected for the Corporations of Hamilton and St. George's. Goods by post are exempt.
- How much is duty on a car?
- Private cars are 75% of the first $10,000 of value and 150% of everything above it — a $30,000 car carries $37,500 in duty. Bikes are 0% and motorcycles 35%.
